In 1934, Italy hosted and participated in the World Cup for the first time, beating Czechoslovakia 2-1 in the final to claim the first World Cup title in the team's history. At the 1938 World Cup, Italy successfully defended their title. At the 1982 World Cup, Italy lifted the trophy again with a solid defensive line known as "catenaccio" (concrete defense) and individual attacking performances, becoming the second team to win the World Cup three times. At the 1994 World Cup, Italy defeated Nigeria, Spain, and Bulgaria in succession in the knockout stage to reach the final, during which Roberto Baggio scored 5 goals. However, in the final, Roberto Baggio missed a crucial penalty, handing the title to Brazil. At the 2006 World Cup, Italy performed,successively defeating Australia, Ukraine, and Germany without conceding a single goal, and once again faced France in the final. This time, the final was full of controversy. The match ended 1-1 and went to a penalty shootout, but before that, Zinedine Zidane was sent off for headbutting Marco Materazzi. Italy won the penalty shootout to secure their fourth World Cup title. In 2018, Italy failed to qualify for the World Cup finals. In 2021, Italy won the European Championship for the second time.
